My Review on Leading Women in Music
First, it’s not a bad read at all. In fact, I appreciate the time and effort he put into it to give us an insight into these female lives. However, it’s not as detailed or deep as I was hoping. It’s more like a quick skim of their lives with fun facts. Another problem is the information is already things I have seen on the internet. I was hoping for something new or surprising. This book is perfect if you don’t know the artist well or want a fan collection.
Not all the information is accurate. For example, he states that Beyonce and Kelly Rowland are cousins. That’s a vast promotion even done in the media when that’s false. Kelly is actually a very close family friend. They are so close they call each other sisters, not cousins. That’s just one example off the top of my head. Not all of it is the author’s fault, considering he relied on the internet to give him some credible information. I recommend being careful.
Despite all the negativity, you may get introduced to new songs and albums, run into some oldies, or do precisely what this book intended: Be inspired.
Other Reviews on Leading Women in Music
A 5-Star from Amazon
I love the inspirational quotes of each featured musician and how the author highlights not only their struggle to succeed against all odds, but how they give back to their communities now that they are on top of the world! Highly recommend this fun, easy and entertaining read.
Another 5 Star
An extremely powerful collection of influential women in music. The author couldn’t have chosen better iconic female artists to share their stories. I highly enjoyed discovering the interesting facts and exploring more into the personalities of the artists, so many strong, courageous women. The book was totally engaging from start to end. The way the author describes the journeys is so empowering. I highly recommend this wonderful book of discovery.
A One-Star from Amazon (originally in Spanish. Translated to English)
It’s a book that I bought for a gift and it has been quite a disappointment because it doesn’t go into depth; it gives two and a half facts about each artist; it seems that that information was taken from Wikipedia and put together in a book. A useless waste of money.
Good Reads
A Five Star Review (the only review)
I loved the book. There were so many magnificent divas represented and I thoroughly enjoyed reading their stories. It was great to get 25 music icons in one book to read about and they came from heaps of different genres. I had no idea some of them were so influential and one of them, who is a megastar and has been for many years, has not made been inducted into the Hall of Fame, even though she’s the only artist to ever have a Billboard hit on at least one chart for six consecutive decades. I couldn’t believe it. It’s a great book and I highly recommend it.
Is It Worth It
That really depends on you. It is if you’re looking for a quick read or are willing to give any book a chance. It’s less extensive than it says. I wouldn’t recommend it to a historian or someone above the basics.
I didn’t find it worth it at the time. However, I’m not going to be a negative nelly. It was a good foundation for anything I needed to learn, and I could learn about artists I’d heard about but was not so familiar with. I took the information given and did some more profound research, then, on top of that, referred back in case I forgot a small fact. The book is for someone else, though.
Enjoy it if you decide to buy it. You could gain and benefit more than I was able to.
